Basil Finer in memoriam
Some dozen years ago a circle of friends, Basil among them, formed a study group within the framework of Seniorsuniversitetet in Uppsala. Once a week we gathered to read, study and discuss Shakespeare, later moving on to a selection of English Poetry through the Ages which included Rosetti. Basil retired from the group a few years back, but graced us with his presence more than once in the years after that. And what a good friend he was. Generous in talking about life’s experiences, his own professional attachment to Sweden, continuously spreading cheerful goodwill to all. The group attended the celebration of his 90th birthday and our Chair revisits his words on that occasion : "In my tribute to him at his 90th birthday party I suggested that Basil in his wisdom was the Prospero of our Shakespeare class. But in one respect the comparison fell short because there was one quality Prospero lacked in spades that Basil had in abundance - a delicious sense of humour. Playing the schoolboy with his raised hand saying “Sir, Sir...” was a life-enhancing instance of that. To slightly misquote Hamlet: “He was a man, take him for all in all we shall not look upon his like again”. Our Circle, will sorely miss an exceptional colleague, but will forever remember Basil – the kindest of friends. Richard Glover Terry Carlbom
